How many moving boxes do you need?

Buy, rent or get them for free?
Rental plastic crates are sturdy and stack well, and they are often delivered to and collected from your door. They suit short moves in particular, where the crates can be returned soon.
Cardboard boxes are bought to keep and can be used for storage later. Free boxes from shops are a cheap option, but they come in different sizes and are often weaker, so pack heavy things in sturdier boxes.
Many moving companies offer boxes as an extra service. You can ask for them in the same quote request.
Packing tips
- Heavy things in small boxes and light things in large ones. A box of books fills up faster than you'd think.
- Keep each box under about 20 kg so it can be carried safely.
- Fill boxes to the top. A half-empty box collapses when others are stacked on it.
- Tape the bottom in a cross and write the room and contents on two sides.
- Pack plates on their edge between sheets of paper and wrap glasses. Fill any gaps with paper.
- Keep valuables, documents and medicines in your own bag.
