Move-out cleaning in a rented home: what needs cleaning?
A tenant must hand the home back clean and tidy. A thorough move-out clean is the best way to avoid disputes over the deposit. First check your tenancy agreement and your landlord's instructions for what is expected of you.
Kitchen
- Empty, defrost and wash the fridge and freezer. Leave the doors ajar if the appliances are left switched off.
- Clean the hob, oven, baking trays and cooker hood, including the grease filter.
- Wipe the cupboards inside and out, as well as the worktops and splashback tiles.
- Clean the sink and the dishwasher filter if there is a dishwasher.
Bathroom and sauna
- Clean the floor drain, toilet, washbasin and shower area.
- Remove limescale from the taps, shower wall and tiles.
- Wash the mirrors and cabinets.
- Wash the sauna benches and floor if the home has a sauna.
Other rooms
- Vacuum and wash the floors, including under the furniture.
- Dust the window sills, skirting boards, doors and light switches.
- Empty the walk-in wardrobe, cupboards, balcony and basement and attic storage.
- Take away rubbish and recycling. Large furniture and bulky waste don't belong in the building's bins.
- Check your tenancy agreement for whether window cleaning is part of the move-out clean.
Normal wear and tear and the move-out inspection
A tenant isn't responsible for normal wear and tear, such as small marks from everyday living. Dirt and damage caused by carelessness, however, can lead the landlord to deduct costs from the deposit.
Many landlords carry out a move-out inspection before returning the deposit. Take your own photos of every room after cleaning and keep them until the deposit has been returned.
If you're short of time, you can buy a move-out clean from a cleaning company. Agree in advance what it includes and make sure it matches your landlord's instructions.
