How to choose a reliable moving company

The cheapest quote isn't always the best value if things get broken or the price goes up on moving day. A few checks before accepting a quote save you trouble.

Check these before accepting a quote

  • Business ID (Y-tunnus): the company's details can be found free of charge in the Business Information System (YTJ).
  • Prepayment register: the same service shows whether the company is in the register. If you pay a company that isn't registered, responsibility for withholding tax can pass to you as the payer.
  • Goods transport licence: a company carrying goods professionally by lorry must have a licence from Traficom. A company using a van within Finland doesn't necessarily need one.
  • Insurance: ask how damage is compensated. A transport company's statutory liability is typically limited per kilo, so for valuable items also check your own home insurance.
  • Reviews and experiences from other customers.

What does a good quote include?

  • A total price, or an hourly rate with an estimate of the hours, including VAT.
  • The number of movers and the size of the van.
  • What the price includes: carrying, driving, waiting time, packing, boxes, dismantling and assembly.
  • Any extra charges, for example for no lift, heavy items, weekends or a long carrying distance.
  • Payment method and cancellation terms.

Warning signs

  • The company has no business ID, or refuses to give it.
  • The price is only given verbally and you can't get a written quote.
  • A large advance payment is demanded before the move, especially in cash.
  • The price is much lower than other quotes for no clear reason.

How Kuljetusnetti helps

Kuljetusnetti approves every partner company individually before it can see quote requests. You get written quotes in one place, which makes comparing them easy. Still, always compare what the quotes include, not just the total.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I check a moving company's business ID?

In the Business Information System (YTJ), which is free to search. It also shows whether the company is in the prepayment register.

Who pays if something breaks during the move?

The transport company is responsible for damage, but its statutory liability is typically limited per kilo. Report damage immediately in writing with photos, and also check your own home insurance.

Do I have to pay the moving company in advance?

Usually a move is paid for afterwards. A large advance payment before the move is a good reason to ask more questions before accepting the quote.
