How much does moving in Helsinki cost?

In Helsinki, prices are most often pushed up by inner-city stairwells with no lift or only a small one, long carrying distances from courtyards and the rush at the turn of the month. Below are estimates for typical homes. Read more about what determines the cost of a move.

Moving cost estimates by home type
Home Size Estimate
Studio about 30 m² 340–530 €
One-bedroom flat about 50 m² 450–700 €
Two-bedroom flat about 75 m² 580–910 €
Detached house about 120 m² 820–1 280 €

Estimate: local move of about 10 km, no packing and no heavy items. Calculated with the same formula as our moving price calculator. Quotes from companies are always more accurate.

Inner city or suburb: what changes the amount of work?

In the old stone buildings of the inner city, for example in Kallio, Töölö, Punavuori and Kruununhaka, the lift is often small or there isn't one at all. Sofas, cabinets and beds are then carried up and down the stairs, which adds working time and often the number of movers needed. Give the floor and lift situation as precisely as possible in your quote request: it is one of the main reasons why quotes differ.

In the suburbs, such as Vuosaari, Itäkeskus, Mellunkylä and Laajasalo, buildings are usually newer, lifts are roomier and the van can usually park close to the front door. For these moves, the price depends most on the amount of belongings and the driving distance.

Parking a moving van in Helsinki

There is little free kerb space in the city centre, and the van may have to stand further away than you expected. Loading and unloading is allowed in no-parking zones, but not in no-stopping zones. If the van needs to stand for a long time where it obstructs other traffic, check the city's guidelines and whether a permit is needed well before moving day.

Driving into a courtyard often requires the housing company's permission and a gate key. If your quote request says whether the van can get into the yard and how far it is to the door, the moving company can estimate the work correctly and won't need to add extra to the quote just in case.

When is the best time to move in Helsinki?

Most tenancies start and end at the turn of the month, so the last and first days of the month and weekends are booked first. In August and September student moves add to the rush. If you can choose, a weekday in the middle of the month is usually the easiest to book.

Book a moving company at least two to three weeks in advance, and earlier for the turn of the month. Also remember to tell your housing company or property manager about the move and book the lift if your building has a practice for that.

FAQ: moving in Helsinki

How much does moving a one-bedroom flat in Helsinki cost?

Using our price calculator formula, a local move from a one-bedroom flat of about 50 m² costs around 450–700 €. A stairwell with no lift, a long carrying distance or a packing service raise the price. You get an exact price by comparing quotes, because moving companies quote based on the details of your move.

Do I need a parking permit for the moving van?

Short loading and unloading usually doesn't need a permit: loading is allowed in no-parking zones, but not in no-stopping zones. If the van stands for a long time where it obstructs traffic, check the city's guidelines in advance. Driving into a courtyard often needs the housing company's permission.

How far in advance should I book a moving company?

At least two to three weeks in advance. The days around the turn of the month and weekends fill up fastest in Helsinki, so ask for quotes even earlier for those.

Does moving from Helsinki to Espoo or Vantaa cost more?

Moves within the Helsinki region involve short drives, so the price depends more on the amount of belongings, floors, lifts and carrying distances than on the distance itself. The same moving companies usually serve the whole Helsinki region.

Does it cost anything to ask for quotes?

No. Sending a quote request and comparing quotes is free and doesn't commit you to anything. You only pay the moving company whose quote you accept.
